Resonant quote
Jun. 26th, 2009 | 06:04 am
Which is what I want with regards to a few people who have been in my life, but proven themselves unhealthy to keep in it...
"I don't want him dead. I just want him behind me. Miles and years. I suppose I just have to wait for the years. I still think of him every day, and I don't want to. Dead would be even worse, for that."
From The Sharing Knife: Beguilement by Lois McMaster Bujold
This is why I keep reading Bujold. She has such a discerning eye.

At 2.48pm this afternoon, I was informed that someone accepted the SEO position at my employer and that he will start at the end of this month.
*squeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!*
Now I have to finish my Analysis/Proposal for my new/old position.
*wild Kermit arm-flail of Yayness*
On a separate note, I follow a blog called "Captain Tumor Man" -- written by a wine importer and critic named Joe Dressner. He has a brain tumor and is currently in round 4 of 6 of his chemo. I find him a welcome antidote most of the cancer blogs out there, which are all very... well, frankly, religious with a capital Xianity. Dressner is... well, let me give you the quote that put me in throes of laughter today:
"Who appointed me the [ethics] cop? Nobody. I just believe in honesty and I can play the cancer card and you can't. Although I was [already] an asshole before I had cancer."
Joe Dressner, Captain Tumor Man, 5-30-2009
I had a hard time explaining to my coworkers just why, in my life, that quote is so damned funny...

The Weekly Bullet Point Update
Jun. 14th, 2009 | 06:21 pm
mood:
germy
- Work: Still in the Web Department SEO job. They had an interview last week. There were actually three candidates and one stepped out.
- SCA: Currently broken, so no fighty. I haz pell nao! Did slow pell work with right arm. Lost a lot of muscle in that shoulder... it got tired just aiming the sword....
- Health: Roommates managed to give me evil SoCal DeathGerm. *glares meaningfully at roommates* Missed War of the Trees because I was flat on my back wheezing through snot. Actually went to the doc and received real honest-to-goodness Sudafed. Spent the last three days mostly doused with NyQuil, starting at 7pm, waking once around midnight or so, taking another dose of NyQuil, and passing out til 7 or 8 am.
- Neti Pot: is *wierd*... We're pouring salty warm water through our noses.... it doesn't hurt, it's just.... reminds me of a phrase from David Palmer's Emergence: "Not painful, really, just...ew." Character was talking about removing a catheter.
- Mundane Life: Debating.... been invited to a Women's Retreat, in Mexico! Problem is? It's the same weekend as September Crown, and Crown's in Terra Pomaria...

Can you tell that I actually know who Tom Mix was? Yeah. Too many 1930s & '40s movie serials when I was a kid...
Some quick bullet points as to the current state of the life of the Vestinator:
That's about it.
Carry on.
Some quick bullet points as to the current state of the life of the Vestinator:
- Work: Still in the Web Department SEO job. Talked to company ownership. Did not burst into tears (but was close). Ownership says 3-4 weeks to get last two candidates through second interviews and make choices, hang in there. I have actually SEEN the new floorplan for the cubicles in the Marketing department and it includes Me. YAYNESS.
- SCA: Currently broken, so no fighty. This is majorly depressing. I did not realize how much endorphins that was pumping through my system on a regular basis. Battling serious depression with only gym workouts. Not fun. But doing therapy on shoulder, eating ibuprofen, icing, stretching and glucosamine. May not be in repair for either Wars. This sucks.
- Car: Just finished minor repairs (headlamp) with major costs. $400 for replacing the headlamp assembly unit. Because Volvo designed the car so you have to take the front bumper off first... I'm like WTF, Volvo? Clearly you do NOT have trucks flinging gravel down your roads....
- Mundane Life: Currently exploring this "dating" thing. They are muggles, but hey. Gotta start somewhere, right? I've gone through so many changes in the past year and a half that I'm a significantly (albeit subtly) different person. So, seeing how this new person reacts.... very interesting!
That's about it.
Carry on.

Discussions about my FAVORITE author

Author Jo Walton (bluejo) analyzes and promotes discussion about the works (and philosophy) of Lois McMaster Bujold.
Bujold is a writer of incredible delicacy, breadth, scope and insight. I have found her books to be an excellent practicum for many human interactions....

Music Recommendations for Music I Love
Apr. 9th, 2009 | 07:17 pm
mood:

This is the newsletter for the small music publisher Prometheus Music. (Any of you who have heard the music I listen to, or gotten those "Love Ya" CDs from me, will recognize some of these tunes.)
http://www.promethe us-music. com/catalog. html
TO TOUCH THE STARS is a collection of music about space, including the song that made Buzz Aldrin cry on national TV ("Fire in the Sky" by musician -- and JPL rocket scientist Dr. Jordin Kare); songs played to wake up shuttle astronauts (and the Mars Rovers), songs sung by kids' choruses and more. Hey, if playing the second track can make the grocery boy rock out in the parking lot at Albertsons.. .? It's all good.
ROUNDWORM is a collection of parodies of songs you may or may not already know. If you know that familiar Heather Alexander song that goes "How Many of Them Can We Make Die" you'll just die for the Christmas parody sung from the P.O.V. of the reindeer ("Human aircraft -- hard to port!")
The Calvin-and-Hobbs "Something's Under the Bed" is hilarious, and any computer programmer will roll after listening to God Wrote in LISP. :)
Julia Ecklar's TRAVELLER albulm is *not* part of the sale.
But Julia's an incredible singer with an amazing set of pipes (all natural) that leaves microphones trembling and sound engineers throwing themselves across their boards like it's a live grenade.
Heh.
I really recommend her DIVINE INTERVENTION album. (Yes, track 2 is about the film "Ladyhawke!" with Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfieffer and Matthew Broderick.)
And to not leave out the fourth album on the catalog, MY FAVORITE SINGS by Kathy Mar....
Merlin will creep you out -- almost as much as The Song of the Ripper (yeah, that Jack guy). Dirty Movie makes me giggle every time; and A Child's Song makes me weep. D*mn good stuff by someone with a beautiful voice and a lot of passion about her music.
Some awesome music by folks who just love to make music.
( Newsletter text with linkies!! )

Of course, they don't have separate charts for athletes, so technically?

It's fun being an outlier and disproving the system. :)
